Asia's economies are riding a wave of AI driven demand, but Southeast Asia's share of that boom looks a lot more fragile than the headline growth numbers suggest, according to Fortune. Singapore has lifted its growth forecast to a range of 4.5 to 5.5 percent, and Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam have all landed fresh data center investment, yet economists warn the region is capturing a narrower and more temporary slice of the AI buildout than its neighbors.

Economist Danny Quah described the current burst of activity as a sugar rush, arguing that Southeast Asia is mainly supplying supporting semiconductors and infrastructure rather than leading edge technology. That kind of contribution is easy for other countries to replicate, he said, which means it comes without the sustained advantage that would turn a short term boost into lasting growth.

The contrast with the rest of Asia is stark. Taiwan is on pace for its first double digit GDP growth since 2010, South Korean exports have surged more than 60 percent, and Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, and China all posted export growth above 20 percent in July. Stock markets have moved with the data, with South Korea's KOSPI index up nearly 60 percent so far this year.

Southeast Asia's structural challenges compound the problem. The region is dealing with aging populations, brain drain, unreliable power grids, and water shortages that limit how much data center capacity it can realistically add. Its traditional edge, cheap labor, also risks locking it into lower value stages of production rather than pulling it up the technology ladder.

Layered on top of the economic picture is a geopolitical one. The United States and China are each pushing competing AI frameworks, described in the piece as Pax Silica and WAICO, and both are pressuring smaller economies to align with one camp or the other. That pressure cuts against the openness to multiple investors and partners that Southeast Asia's growth model has traditionally relied on. Absent real investment in homegrown technological capability, Fortune reports the region's current AI linked boom looks more like a passing phenomenon than a durable transformation.
